# How remote desktop, remote support and RMM work

## The connection path

Both the operator console and the remote device open outbound connections to the 247connect cloud service, which brokers them into one encrypted session. Nothing listens for inbound connections on the endpoint, so no port forwarding, static IP address or VPN tunnel is required, and the session works the same way on a corporate LAN, a home broadband line or a mobile hotspot.

1. **Create an account** — Sign up for a 247connect account. The 14-day trial includes 2 on-demand licences and 10 managed devices, with no credit card required.
2. **Choose managed or on-demand** — Install the Managed Agent on devices you support regularly, or use an on-demand licence to send a one-time agent for ad-hoc support.
3. **Deploy the agent** — For managed devices, install the small agent once — 25 MB on Windows, 200 MB on macOS. For on-demand support, send the end user a download link at the start of the session.
4. **Authenticate as an operator** — Sign in to the console with your named operator account and two-factor authentication.
5. **Start the session** — Select the device and connect. A typical encrypted session is established in around eight seconds.
6. **Work with in-session tools** — Transfer files by drag and drop, chat with the user, open PowerShell or Task Manager, review hardware inventory, and reboot with automatic reconnect if needed.

## Access models

- **Managed (unattended) devices** run a persistent agent, so an operator can connect to a server, kiosk or unattended workstation with nobody present at the far end. Suited to estates the team is responsible for continuously.
- **On-demand (attended) devices** get a one-time session started by the person at the keyboard, with no permanent software left behind. Suited to ad-hoc help for users, contractors and devices outside the managed estate.

## Layered session security

- Zero-trust access: every session is authenticated and authorised at connection time rather than inheriting trust from the network.
- AES-256 encryption in transit for screen, input, file transfer and chat traffic.
- Operator identity and permissions decide which groups and devices are reachable.
- End-user consent and visible session indicators for attended support.
- Session logging so an auditor can reconstruct who connected to what, and when.

## The RMM monitoring loop

Remote monitoring and management is a continuous cycle rather than a one-off action: **monitor** the estate against thresholds, **detect** a deviation, **decide** whether it needs automation or a person, **act** through a script, patch or remote session, then **verify** the fix and feed the result back into monitoring. Remote control is the escalation path the loop falls back on when automation cannot resolve something.
